In this class you will learn the basics of working with clay through learning to throw on the pottery wheel. We will start with the cylinder and move onto cups, bowls and vases. Students will also learn how to turn their thrown objects into finished pieces by learning trimming techniques, how to attach handles and how to apply glaze. All levels are welcome. It can get messy! Wear clothes that can get dirty.
Bring an old towel. MAG provides each student up to 1 bag of clay. Additional clay will be sold at cost. Fee also includes outside studio time during MAG business hours.

In this workshop, Craig Rhodes will demonstrate how to make mugs that combine both contruction and throwing techniques including how to add textures, pull handles directly off the mug and more. The technique can be used for a number of other projects as well as mugs.
The workshop will also include tips for those who want to continue working in clay during their later years that Rhodes has picked up during the 50 yrs he’s been a working ceramicist.
If time allows other skills like throwing off the hump, carving techniques, glazing, footers, tools, and more will be covered. Along the way a lively discussion of contemporary clay work, history, other clay artists, culture and more will be encouraged.
Clay can be messy; dress in clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Pack a sack lunch.
